Enjoy the History & St. Johns River of wonderful Volusia County, Florida!

Red Roof Cafe defines 'Breakfast' for you...

Breakfast is the first meal taken after rising from a night's sleep, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day's work. Among English speakers, "breakfast" can be used to refer to this meal or to refer to a meal composed of traditional breakfast foods (such as eggs, oatmeal and sausage) served at any time of day. The word literally refers to breaking the fasting period of the prior night. It has its origin in the Judeo-Christian custom of fasting from food between the supper meal of one day and the morning meal of the next.

Your mother was right: Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Not only does it give you energy to start a new day, but breakfast is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance.

Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (as opposed to the kind containing doughnuts) can help give you:

A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals
Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom
More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity
Lower cholesterol levels

Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on the playground, with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination.

AND NOW A "MAC AND CHEESE" FACT ABOUT THE HISTORIC ST.JOHNS RIVER!!

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings used the St. Johns as a backdrop in her books South Moon Under and The Yearling, and several short stories. In 1933 she took a boat trip along the St. Johns with a friend. In the upper basin, she remarked on the difficulty of determining direction due to the river's ambiguous flow, and wrote in a chapter titled "Hyacinth Drift" in her memoir Cross Creek that she had the best luck in watching the way the hyacinths floated. Rawlings wrote, "If I could have, to hold forever, one brief place and time of beauty, I think I might choose the night on that high lonely bank above the St. Johns River."

Open 7 Days A Week | Red Roof Cafe

Eating in the middle of the day, several hours after breakfast, re-energizes your body and can raise blood sugar levels when focus and concentration are flagging. If you’re feeling sluggish, eating even a small lunch can renew your energy and help you feel refreshed and ready to take on the next several hours. In addition, eating lunch keeps your metabolism active, especially if you have a moderately sized meal and a snack before and afterward.

“Extended periods of starvation between large meals creates gaps which keep metabolism from staying active,” says Dr. Kurt Hong, the Center for Human Nutrition director of Huntington Medical Foundation.

Five reasons for your teen should eat breakfast today

Check out these five reasons for your teen to eat breakfast today.

Energy. Along with sleep and exercise, breakfast is one of the best ways to recharge your batteries. It’s the perfect opportunity to get energy-boosting carbohydrates like whole-grain bread, oatmeal and fruit. Create a breakfast with staying power using protein and carbohydrate combos like fruit and yogurt, whole-grain cereal with milk or a whole-grain waffle with nut butter. Breakfast is an ideal way to energize so there will be no sleeping in class!

Improved concentration. Studies suggest that eating a healthy breakfast improves brain function — particularly memory and recall. This is essential for soaking up new knowledge and applying it later for a big exam.

Better grades. Research shows students who eat breakfast perform better academically. It’s not fully understood why, but scientists believe it may be because breakfast supplies essential nutrients to the nervous system to rev up brain power. Or the explanation could simply be that breakfast alleviates hunger and a rumbling tummy, which can interfere with academic performance, behavior and self-esteem.

Healthy weight. Teens may think skipping breakfast is a good way to save on calories and lose weight, but quite the opposite is true. Breakfast skippers tend to weigh more than those who eat breakfast regularly. Additionally, those who eat a morning meal tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day, which can positively impact weight and long-term health.

It tastes great! This may be the most compelling reason to enjoy breakfast before a long school day. Warm up with a hearty bowl of oatmeal on a cool morning or hydrate with sweet chunks of fresh fruit and yogurt when it’s warm outside.

With so many options on our menu, we are sure to find something that works — from breakfast sandwiches, toast with eggs, fruit juice, or something else from our vast menu… what’s not to love?

The Red Roof Cafe wants breakfast to be part of your healthy lifestyle!

Breakfast Benefit: Weight Control

Many studies, in both adults and children, have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers.

Why? One theory suggests that eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day, and help people make better food choices at other meals. While it might seem you could save calories by skipping breakfast, this is not an effective strategy. Typically, hunger gets the best of breakfast-skippers, and they eat more at lunch and throughout the day.

Another theory behind the breakfast-weight control link implies that eating breakfast is part of a healthy lifestyle that includes making wise food choices and balancing calories with exercise. For example, consider the successful losers followed by the National Weight Control Registry, all of whom have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off at least one year. Some 80% of the people in the Registry regularly eat breakfast (and also follow a calorie-controlled, low-fat diet).

It's worth noting that most studies linking breakfast to weight control loss looked at a healthy breakfast containing protein and/or whole grains -- not meals loaded with fat and calories.

What makes the Red Roof Cafe Special for Pregnant Women?

What makes the Red Roof Cafe Special for Pregnant Women?

Breakfast is crucial for pregnant women, who are supporting the additional calorie needs of a growing fetus. For this population, “Breakfast is a vital meal to start the day with the proper balance of calories and nutrients,” Hendel says.

Specifically, breakfast can boost calcium and folic acid intake, both of which are imperative to a healthy pregnancy. Women who are pregnant require a higher-than-normal calcium intake, since a growing baby leeches calcium from their bones; plus folic acid helps prevent neural tube deformities.

“The folic acid issue is important when you’re either considering pregnancy or have an accidental pregnancy occur,” Hendel says. “So eating a balanced breakfast regularly maintains a healthy woman’s body as she even contemplates pregnancy, which is hugely important.”

Breakfast for this population, however, is key for other reasons as well. Pizzoferrato explains that prolonged fasting during pregnancy, such as longer than 12 hours, can have immediate and long-lasting effects on a developing fetus.

“Because a fetus relies on the nutrients obtained through the mother’s diet for development, a prolonged habitual fast can result in slow growth and preterm labor,” she warns. “In addition, research suggests that during the early stages of development, influences in the fetal environment could trigger genetic changes in order to adapt to life outside the womb. In this scenario, habitual fasting could interfere with a fetus’ normal metabolic programming in order to ‘adapt’ to the perceived threat of not having enough food in their outside environment.”

Pizzoferrato says extreme examples of such epigenetic changes have been studied in the offspring of women who were pregnant during wartime or in periods of famine. “Through cohort studies, researchers identified similar metabolic anomalies in glucose-insulin metabolism of the adult offspring, leading to obesity and diabetes,” she continues. “While skipping breakfast may not guarantee the same course of events for the child, permanent changes in metabolic programming can’t be ruled out.”

As an added benefit, Frank says including a starch at breakfast can reduce bouts of nausea, which is common for many pregnant women.
