Bill and Cara Elder retired from teaching in Pennsylvania public schools in 1999, and then after 10 years, retired from Florida public schools on June 9, 2009. They are historic interpreters and 18th Century reenactors who enjoy depicting life in the colonial times.

As George and Martha Washington, they have made appearances at Fort Roberdeau in Pennsylvania, The Villages, FL, The Living History Park, North Augusta, SC, and at the request of many organizations and school groups. They have delivered their message, “In God We Still Trust” at church services in Florida and Pennsylvania, as well as making topic presentations to the Sons of the American Revolution/Daughters of the American Revolution in the DeLand, FL and Ormond Beach, FL Chapters, the local historical society, and The Living History Park in North Augusta, SC, and most recently for the Lifelong Learning College in The Villages, FL.

As members of the 2nd PA Regiment of the Continental Line and 43rd Regiment of Foot in His Majesty's Army they have participated in major battle reenactments, such as Battleroad 2000 in Lexington and Concord (MA) to commemorate and celebrate the 225th anniversary of the American Revolution, Battle of Charleston (SC), Bordentown (New Jersey), Battle of the Hook (Gloucester, VA), Battle of Monmouth (New Jersey), Battle at Brandywine (PA), and many others which has added to their background knowledge of the Revolutionary War and Colonial Living.

In addition, they have contributed to living history events in Mt. Vernon, Valley Forge, Philadelphia 4th of July, Williamsburg, Princeton Battlefield (NJ), Paoli (PA), Hope Lodge (PA), Fort Roberdeau (PA).

Come find your Zen at Inspirit Studio Yoga

Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga (Sanskrit kundalini-yoga), also known as laya yoga, is a school of yoga. Based on a 1935 treatise by Sivananda Saraswati, kundalini yoga was influenced by the tantra and shakta schools of Hinduism.
Kundalini yoga derives its name through a focus on awakening kundalini energy through regular practice of meditation, pranayama, chanting mantra and yoga asana.
Called by practitioners "the yoga of awareness", it aims "to cultivate the creative spiritual potential of a human to uphold values, speak truth, and focus on the compassion and consciousness needed to serve and heal others."
"Kundalini Yoga" is based on the treatise Kundalini Yoga by Sivananda Saraswati, published in 1935. Swami Sivananda introduced "Kundalini yoga" as a part of Laya yoga. Together with other currents of Hindu revivalism and Neo-Hinduism, Kundalini Yoga became popular in 1960s to 1980s western counterculture.
In 1968 Kundalini Yoga was introduced to the US by Yogi Bhajan who founded the "Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization" (3HO) as a teaching organization. While Yoga practice and philosophy is generally considered a part of Hindu culture, Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is founded on the principles of Sikh Dharma.
Although it adheres to the three pillars of Patanjali's traditional yoga system: discipline, self-awareness and self-dedication (Patanjali Yoga Sutras, II:1), Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan does not condone extremes of asceticism or renunciation. Practitioners are encouraged to marry, establish businesses, and be fully engaged in society.
Rather than worshiping God, Yogi Bhajan's teachings encourage students to train their mind to experience God. Yogi Bhajan sometimes referred to the Sikh lifestyle as Raja Yoga, the yoga of living detached, yet fully engaged in the world.
In respect of the rigor of his teachings, Yogi Bhajan found kinship with other 20th century Sikh sadhu saints, such as Sant Baba Attar Singh, Sant Baba Nand Singh, and Bhai Randhir Singh. In the outreach of his teachings, Yogi Bhajan's contributions are unparalleled in modern times.
In addition to inspiring the founding numerous yoga studios and centers of practice across the US. Kundalini Yoga continues to grow in influence and popularity largely in the Americas, Europe, South Africa, Togo, Australia, and East Asia.

Visit the History of the 1876 Heritage Inn!

The Timucuan Indians were the first inhabitants of Hontoon Island. Evidence of their presence can be seen by a large shell mound that still exist at the end of the Hammock Trail, 1.7 miles one way, on what is mostly a shaded hike.

The Timucua were an American Indian people who lived in Northeast and North Central Florida and southeast Georgia. They were the largest indigenous group in that area and consisted of about 35 chiefdoms, many leading thousands of people. The various groups of Timucua spoke several dialects of the Timucua language. At the time of European contact, the territory occupied by speakers of Timucuan dialects occupied about 19,200 square miles, and was home to between 50,000 and 200,000 Timuacans. It stretched from the Altamaha River and Cumberland Island in present-day Georgia as far south as Lake George in central Florida, and from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Aucilla River in the Florida Panhandle, though it reached the Gulf of Mexico at no more than a couple of points.

What is Vinyasa Yoga?

What is Vinyasa Yoga?

Vinyasa is a Sanskrit term often employed in relation to certain styles of yoga. The term vinyasa may be broken down into its Sanskritic roots to assist in decoding its meaning. Nyasa denotes "to place" and vi denotes "in a special way." Like many Sanskrit words, vinyasa is a term that has many meanings.

There are four basic definitions of vinyasa:
1) the linking of body movement with breath;
2) a specific sequence of breath-synchronized movements used to transition between sustained postures;
3) setting an intention for one's personal yoga practice and taking the necessary steps toward reaching that goal; and
4) a type of yoga class.

Some people define vinyasa as:

Sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow. It creates a movement meditation that reveals all forms as being impermanent and for this reason are not held on to.

It denotes a flowing, dynamic form of yoga, connected to breath or pranayama in which yoga and mudra transitions are embodied as linkages within and between asana.

Vinyasa is also employed as a noun to describe the sequence of poses that are performed between Adho Mukha Svanasanas or Downward Facing Dog as part of a Surya Namaskara or Sun Salutation sequence. Though this is more correctly termed half-vinyasa as full-vinyasa returns to complete standing asana or positions.

Srivasta Ramaswami, author of The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga and a direct disciple of the legendary Yoga teacher Krishnamacharya, brings forth the essence of Vinyasa in asana practice in the following way,

This guru believed that the correct vinyasa method is essential in order to receive the full benefits from yoga practice. The following quote, which is translated from Yoga Makaranda, perfectly captures this sentiment.

"From time immemorial the Vedic syllables…are chanted with the correct (high, low, and level) notes. Likewise, sruti (pitch) and laya (rhythm) govern Indian classical music. Classical Sanskrit poetry follows strict rules of chandas (meter), yati (caesura), and prasa (assemblage). Further, in mantra worship, nyasas (usually the assignment of different parts of the body to various deities, with mantras and gestures)—such as Kala nyasa, Matruka nyasa, Tatwa nyasa—are integral parts. Likewise yogasana (yogic poses), pranayama (yogic breathing exercises), and mudras (seals, locks, gestures) have been practiced with vinyasas from time immemorial....However, these days, in many places, many great souls who teach yoga do so without the vinyasas. They merely stretch or contract the limbs and proclaim that they are practicing yoga…"

Ramaswami further goes on to add, "Just as music without proper pitch (sruti) and rhythm (laya) will not give happiness, yogasana practice without the observance of vinyasas will not give health. That being the case what can I say about the long life, strength and other benefits?"

Your mother was right: Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Not only does it give you energy to start a new day, but breakfast is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance.

Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (as opposed to the kind containing doughnuts) can help give you:

A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals
Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom
More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity
Lower cholesterol levels

Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on the playground, with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination.

Come see the US Postal Museum!

Postal Museum's Story - Live the History!
Creation of the U.S. Postal Museum began in 1995 through the efforts of Postmaster Joe Guthrie (Deland, Florida) and postal historian and curator, Richard Feinauer. The museum started as a collection of displays temporarily housed in a ten by sixteen foot room inside the Deland Post Office. In 1998, when the Post Office relocated, a new, permanent home for the display was needed.
Orange City is seemed very well suited for a postal museum since the city and the surrounding area are at the origin of Volusia County's history. Back in 1876, the first Post Office for the area, later to be known as Orange City, was housed in the very same building as the museum now resides, 129 years later! In 1886 a Post Office was established at Blue Springs Landing, on the St. Johns River. Ten years later, the Post Office was again relocated to Orange City( do you know where) and the name was changed to the Orange City Post Office.
The Museum was established for the preservation and appreciation of postal history and postal artifacts. Through the efforts of the United States Postal Service and private individuals, there now exist numerous items on display that represent all phases of the U.S Postal Service from inception to the present time.
Walk inside a recreated Post Office from the 1940's. Visitors will see various artifacts, paperwork, books, forms, and clothing used over fifty years ago. Observe up close many postal artifacts, which have all but disappeared from modern day postal facilities. Learn about mail processing, mail delivery, stamps and postmarks. Explore the 80 foot hallway lined with over 100 shadow boxes full of postal memorabilia and hundreds of envelops categorized with such topics as slogans, Army/Navy, and many more. Find the world's largest postage stamp (???) and the one with the earliest date. Visit the special display on Orange City postal history. (Richard, would like to get this). Search through hundreds of stamps which are "free" for the taking.
The Museum is conveniently located just 30 minutes from Orlando or Daytona Beach in the 1876 Heritage Inn at 300 South Volusia Avenue (Highway 17-92) in Orange City, Florida. The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday 10 a.m. to Noon for self-guided tours. Narrated tours are available with advance notice for tours of eight or more.

AND NOW A "MAC AND CHEESE" FACT ABOUT THE HISTORIC ST.JOHNS RIVER!!

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings used the St. Johns as a backdrop in her books South Moon Under and The Yearling, and several short stories. In 1933 she took a boat trip along the St. Johns with a friend. In the upper basin, she remarked on the difficulty of determining direction due to the river's ambiguous flow, and wrote in a chapter titled "Hyacinth Drift" in her memoir Cross Creek that she had the best luck in watching the way the hyacinths floated. Rawlings wrote, "If I could have, to hold forever, one brief place and time of beauty, I think I might choose the night on that high lonely bank above the St. Johns River."

Orange City, Deland, Debary, Lake Helen, and West Volusia's Breakfast Hot Spot!

BACON + BACON + BACON + EGGS + TOAST = A TASTY BREAKFAST
@ THE RED ROOF CAFE 1876heritageinn.com/red-roof-cafe.htm

What's for breakfast - coffee? Most mornings, we barely glance at the kitchen. Fixing breakfast takes up precious time that's in short supply. But there's ample evidence that the simple act of eating breakfast -- every day -- is a big part of losing weight, lots of weight.

"People skip breakfast thinking they're cutting calories, but by mid-morning and lunch, that person is starved," says Milton Stokes, RD, MPH, chief dietitian for St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City. "Breakfast skippers replace calories during the day with mindless nibbling, bingeing at lunch and dinner. They set themselves up for failure."

The Red Roof Cafe won't allow you to fail - we start making breakfast at 6:30a.m.

Dr. Perez Explains Cupping Therapy Orlando!

So how does cupping work?... Here’s how cupping works.

As we age, especially after 40 years old, our body begins to break down. This includes loss of muscle, adhesions in fascia and decrease in blood flow. You can see this as your muscle tone decreases, we get stiffer and wrinkles start to appear in new places. As we move less and decrease our physical activity the blood supply to tissues decrease and the fascia gets knotted and scarred up further limiting movement and becoming a vicious cycle.
Putting cups over a region helps the body reverse some of these effects. (What is revealed comes from research on cupping done by Russians Scientists.)
Initially it pulls blood into an area. The tissues get saturated with fresh blood while the vacuum pulls stagnant blood out of the area. You can see this in the hickey like appearance that is typically left behind. You may have a black and blue appearance that is rarely painful. I have noticed a couple characteristics about this phenomenon. One is that it happens more in people over 40 and two the more cupping you receive the less the bruising happens.
As new blood is forced into the tissues around the cups the body will begin to develop new blood vessels called neovascularization, new blood vessel formation. As the new vessels form they will have the capability to feed the tissues with nutrient and oxygen. Like you and me, all tissues need food and oxygen to survive.
Something else happens early in this process as well. It is called sterile inflammation. Now many hear the word inflammation and think it is a bad thing. After all we take anti-inflammatory when there is pain and swelling so inflammation must be bad, right? But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Inflammation is the first line of healing. The body releases white blood cells, platelets, fibroblasts and other healing chemicals to promote healing. When the vacuum occurs it causes separation of the different layers of tissue which can cause micro trauma and tearing. The healing chemicals I mentioned above get released and stimulate healing. The inflammation is not chronic nor is it bad.
Next the fascia and tissue can be stretched several feet with cupping. The micro trauma is occurring, the new blood vessels are being formed and the blood and nutrients are starting to flow to the damaged tissue. But when you put 10 or so cups on the back or around the injured area it can begin to stretch the connective tissue and fascia for better movement. Many tell me that cupping works faster and last longer for them than massage. It’s amazing to see the connective tissue stretch this much. Many people start out very tight but over time they can confirm what I see when doing this to people that the tissue is getting looser.
I have seen cupping work very well when used in conjunction with acupuncture and manipulation. While these other techniques address different tissues and functions of the body, no painful condition or injury exists without other tissue being involved.
So to wrap this up, cupping can help you overcome old and new injury by:
Increasing circulation | Increasing oxygenation and tissue delivery
Remove old stagnant blood | Cause micro trauma and beneficial inflammation
Create new blood vessels | Stretch fascia and connective tissue.
Cupping is helpful when used in conjunction with joint manipulation and acupuncture. Cupping, like many holistic techniques works at different rates for different people.
If you have chronic muscle and joint paintry cupping, you’ll know quickly if it will help.

Yoga Pants Advice by Inspirit

Yoga Pants Advice From Inspirit's Blog -

How to select a good pair of yoga pants.

Remember to select your yoga pants based on how you plan to wear them. Keep in mind yoga pants are actually meant to do yoga in, therefore your number one concern is comfort.

Most yoga pants have elastic waistbands and are made of cotton or synthetic fabrics, so they stretch easily. Choose your fabric wisely. At the same time, the fabric should be relatively light and absorbent. Hardcore yoga will make you sweat, and if your yoga pants are practically snow pants you're not going to have a very enjoyable workout. To test the fabric before you make your purchase, pinch it between your thumb and index finger. If it feels smooth, you're on the right track. If the material is rough or more sweat pant-like than yoga pant-like, keep looking for something that'll suit you better. This means you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a pair that fits you.

REMEMBER - Just like any other sport TEST IT FIRST!

Do a few stretches or jumping jacks before you buy your yoga pants; if you have any pain or even irritation, it might be better to try a different pair. Make sure your yoga pants aren't going to tear easily. Usually the more expensive they are, the more durable they'll be during your workouts. Still, you don't want to get a pair of $200 yoga pants that you'll only be using a couple of times, so think about your yoga schedule and as your budget too.

Choose a pair of yoga pants that you feel less self conscious wearing. Besides actual physical comfort, take note of which yoga pants will make you feel the least self-conscious. You can't be worrying about how you look as you're huffing and puffing your way through a yoga workout.

If you're not a big fan of your glutes, try going up a size--slightly loose yoga pants will still fit, but they won't cling to you quite as much as the right size would.

Alternately, if you don't like your legs, get a pair of extra long yoga pants and avoid any poses that will put your legs up in the air. If your a beginner you may not need don't worry about this right away.

Black is the most versatile, the most popular, and least conspicuous color of yoga pants you can buy. If you're genuinely worried about standing out too much in yoga class, go with one of those two and set up your mat near the back of the room.

God is Still Speaking...

Thought for the day: What you focus on the most, expands. We are created beings made in the image of a creative God. What this means is that we all have the power to influence-whether positively or negatively-our circumstances. If you want a dynamic ministry program, you can create it. If you want a vibrant faith community, you can create it. Energy flows where attention goes and if something is dead, dying, or no longer working it's time to assess the amount of time, energy, and resources being given to those areas. If all the money is spent on building maintenance, it is no wonder that the youth program is dying. If all the time is spent at council meetings, it's no wonder that the areas of outreach and evangelism are lacking. We all have the same creative power to ultimately design, and therefore enhance, our lives and our ministries. Sometimes things do require more energy, time, and resources than others...but it requires balance. You can learn a lot about a church's priorities by looking at what they give the most to. Everything requires an investment; if you want more, give more. Hope is not something that just happens unless you create an atmosphere of giving to and investing in the people, things, and programs that inspire hope in your community. What do you hope for, and what are you doing about it?
